Istanbul, TURKEY - Volunteer Imam & Student

Interview made by Cyril Bruyelle in November 2016

What did you want to be when you were a kid?

I wanted to be a soldier. During middle school, I wanted to go to the army.

With whom would you like to have a coffee?

I'm thinking. I would like to have a coffee with the President of Turkey, Mr. Erdogan. I have been admiring him since my younger days. I'm dreaming of having a conversation with him.

If you could choose something that could be taught in every school in the world, what would it be?

The most important thing that should be taught in schools is equality. Today we see in certain places on Earth that people are not been considered equal. People living in certain parts of the world, social classes or income segments are not considered equal to each other. Whatever the case, all humans should be treated as humans. They are all equal. I would like to give education in that respect. We have to approach a person as a human being. Nobody determines their nationality; Mother and father cannot be determined. Therefore, any imbalance because of that, affects all humanity. I would like to teach in the schools of the world that a person is first a human being.

To you, what’s the main characteristic that all human being have in common?

If you think in relation to human nature, most political thinkers in international relations define human nature as anarchic. I mean, selfish. When a person is born, he or she is selfish. Therefore I cannot visualize the question totally. I could not understand it. Everyone is born with selfish feelings. He either overcomes this selfishness, depending on the society and the culture he is in, and becomes more suitable to living in a society or if he is raised the other way he becomes more selfish. All in all, in every human's nature, at birth selfishness exists.

To you, who is the happiest person on earth?

Everyone has a purpose in life. When a person loses his purpose in life, he becomes lazy without doing anything. Purposeless. He tries to carry out his life without any purpose. He reaches the suicidal level. Everyone has a goal in life. The happy person is the person who has either achieved or got closer to this goal in life. Now, I'll give an example. My goal is to become an international relations person in the capacity of changing the world.

In short, the happiest person is the person who has achieved his goal or is walking toward his goal.

If you were President of the US, what would your first reform be?

I wouldn't like to be president of the United States. I can think of occupying an office like that in my own country in the coming years. I'm observing with sadness, especially in our region, international politics and foreign policy.  The U.S. president could not arrange his international policy efficiently. I don't see American politics being sufficient. I don't think it is to the benefit of the whole world. On the contrary, in order to increase the strength of the U.S. and serve its interests, policies that are harmful to certain people, groups and nations are being carried out. If I were the president, the first thing would be to review foreign policies. Another topic, right after the elections, would be to pursue more policies to democratize the U.S. more. Less lobbying, government administrators. I would try to have the policies ran by the president and his team more directly.

What do you need?

Now I need more time as everyone does. I'm a student right now. In order to develop myself more, I need more time for studying.

What would you do if we gave you 1 million dollars now?

I haven't dreamed about it. I would use it as a capital to invest in order to earn more. I would support the charity institutions.

Which innovation, realistic or not, would greatly ease your day-to-day life?

Cell phones are an important innovation. Our contact with people around the world has developed significantly.

What’s the news that affects you the most in your country these days?

Fighting with terrorism. I am of the same opinion as our president.

If you had to create a company, what would it be?

I never thought about it before. I would try to establish a company that would benefit the national economy. A company serving the standards of living of the citizens of my country. If a company is to sell something, it should benefit the people.

Can you draw something beautiful?

I will draw our flag but I don't know if I can.

What are you afraid of?

We are a nation in contact with its past. Throughout our history, 18 states have been formed. As a nation, what we fear the most is to become enslaved. We want to live under the flag of our own nation.

What is your dream?

My dream is to continue my education. I am a student in international relations. I want to continue on with a Master's and Doctorate and become an academician. After becoming an academician, my dream is to become a person contributing in a concrete way.

Close your eyes, you are in 2100, what do you see?

I can't make a vision of 2100 now. We should not close our eyes and imagine but we should open them and look around. We should stay in contact with today's problems in order to decide on the future.

What is the most beautiful thing that you’ve seen in your life?

The most beautiful thing is the view of the Bosporus. I go every now and then to the shore. If I don't go for a certain period of time, I miss it.

If you had to write a book about the current world, what would you be the title?

Deaf World

Who is God for you?

As we are Muslim, we believe in a single God that created the humans. We organize our life on Earth according to life after death. I don't accept a being in God because we believe in Allah. We cannot make any resemblance of Allah to anything. We can only use adjectives to express Allah.

Which of your country's cultural specificities are you the proudest of?

The cultural richness of my country makes me proud. When we look at the world today, there is probably no other country containing such diverse cultures, beliefs, sects, races and social classes. Is there another country like this? I guess not.

If you had to explain our planet to an alien, what would you say?

I would like to tell them about humans and how they live on Earth. How humans, social classes and countries work.

And you, which question would you like to ask the world?

What is your biggest dream? I would ask similar questions to what you asked. The most logical question is to ask people if they are happy in the place that they are living and their biggest dream.
