Middle Gobi, MONGOLIA - Driver
Interview made by Cyril Bruyelle in March 2017
Bayanbaatar was the driver of the van who took me in ten days from Ulaanbaatar to the Gobi Desert and back. His parents were nomads but as many Mongolian today he decided to try another way of life. He still worships a very simple and hard-working way of life. Even if we could not communicate (he didn’t speak a word of English), he was always smiling.
With whom would you like to have a coffee?
I would love to have coffee with anyone who is open-minded and simple.
If you could choose something that could be taught in every school in the world, what would it be?
I'm a driving instructor so I'll teach equipment, traffic rules and in general safety and everything regarding driving.
To you, what’s the main characteristic that all human being have in common?
Friendliness and helpfulness, I would say.
To you, who is the happiest person on earth?
The one who is working, the one who is with his/her family.
If you were President of the US, what would your first reform be?
I don't know exactly what to say. But I would work for peace.
What do you need?
I don't need anything for now since I have my job.
What would you do if we gave you 1 million dollars now?
It's difficult to answer. I think I'll just spend it for my life cost.
Which innovation, realistic or not, would greatly ease your day-to-day life?
If everything is simple that's all we need.
What’s the news that affects you the most in your country these days?
Our country's politic news touches my heart. I think politician are not so consistent with what they're doing.
Do you think your life is easier or more complicated than the life of your parents?
My parents were herdsman and nomad people. I’m living a different life. I'm working as a driver and driving teacher. How to say, actually there ae not so many differences. They lived as happy as I live now.
If you had to create a company, what would it be?
I think it would be an agricultural or forest company, because my wife majored in agriculture.

What are you afraid of?
What is your dream?
My dream already came true.
Close your eyes, you are in 2100, what do you see?
I think there will no cars on the ground, maybe all cars will be flying and everything will be automatic.
What is the most beautiful thing that you’ve seen in your life?
When I graduated from university and got my major, that moment was the most beautiful thing I've seen in my life.
If you had to write a book about the current world, what would be the title?
Who is God for you?
It's not about politics, right? I think it has to be my kids and my wife.
Which of your country's cultural specificities are you the proudest of?
I’m proud of a Mongolian folk song called Urtiin duu and of morin khuur music instrument.
If you could do any job regardless of money, what would it be?
I'll be herdsman and herd cattle, because Mongolian important thing is livestock industry.
If you had to explain our planet to an alien, what would you say?
Our world has many nationalities living together. Our world has lot of water and there are some landscapes. We have five continents. And that's it.
