Jericocoara, BRAZIL - Barman

Ivan

Interview made by Cyril Bruyelle in March 2017

The first time I met with Ivan was when I ordered him a Caipirinha. It was in Jericocoara, a touristic beach in the North of Brazil. Imagine a small remote city on the beach, with only sand in the “streets”. In the evening many small trailers, full of fruits, come on the beach to serve you various types of caipirinhas. Ivan owns one of these. He is 55 years old and originally comes from Brasília. He got married four time and has been living in Jericocoara for 18 years.

What did you want to be when you were a kid?

I wanted to study, and after some years, work, with a strong background.

With whom would you like to have a coffee?

With my mother.

If you could choose something that could be taught in every school in the world, what would it be?

Learn administration stuff

To you, what’s that main characteristic that all human being have in common?

Our own personality

To you, who is the happiest person on earth?

The happiest person, it’s me! [Laughs]

If you were President of the US, what would your first reform be?

I don’t know, I don’t have an answer to this question.

What do you need?

Health. Before all. And do Caipirinhas.

What would you do if we gave you 1 million dollars now?

I'd build a lodge and I'd buy a plot of land in the woods and I'd live there in the countryside. Quietly.

What’s the news that affect you the most in your country these days?

Corruption, violence. We should arrest corrupt people. And violence… there's a clinic for disturbed people. That's the most important thing.

Do you think your life is easier or more complicated than the life of your parents?

In their time it was better. Today it's more complicated. When I was 15 years old, life was better. Today it's more complicated. I prefer the time when I was 15.

If you had to create a company, what would it be?

It would be a guesthouse, and nothing more. With less work. Working with people is very complicated. So I would open a guesthouse and work with my family.

What are you afraid of?

I’m afraid of getting old, of death.

Close your eyes, you are in 2100, what do you see?

Light, and I think about my daughter.

What is the most beautiful thing that you’ve seen in your life?

It’s my 4-year-old daughter. Her name Ivana.

If you had to write a book about the current world, what would you be the title?

It would be about human being, who are very complicated.

Who is God for you?

God is everything. God comes before anything.

Which of your country's cultural specificities are you the proudest of?

It’s the indigenous people. They are the people who are originally from here.

If you could do any job regardless of money, what would you do?

It would be a training and educational centre for poor people.

If you had to explain our planet to an alien, what would you say?

I don’t know what to say…

And you, which question would you like to ask to the world?

Son, just go to work. That's the main thing. That's it, work, go to work. Why don't people work? Young people don't work nowadays, so they have to work.
