New Orleans, USA - Singer

Lucius

Interview made by Cyril Bruyelle in May 2017

What did you want to do when you were a kid?

I wanted to be a singer. And that’s what I became.

With whom would you like to have a coffee?

Deepak Chopra. Because I would love to know how he learned what he learned, how he knows what he knows and how he is in no-doubt of what he knows. He seems very in the “know of the spirit world”, which I find amazing.

If you could choose something that could be taught in every school in the world, what would it be?

A lesson about understanding, being compassionate. I think sometimes we forget to be understanding and compassionate in this world. I think it’s something we all need to learn; how to be giving and how to be understanding.

So, a small 20 minutes course for every kid would be nice. Something has to be about understanding people who are not coming from where you are, who don’t learn the way you learn. Especially in America, we are so confined to just American values and we are not thinking about the rest of world, there are other people in this world. We need to learn how to be understanding of them.

To you, what’s the main characteristic that all human being have in common?

Fear. Fear of something or of other. Either it drives us or it makes us scared to do things, but in both case it is one common characteristic of all human being.

To you, who is the happiest person on earth?

I don’t know. I think children. When I look at my niece and nephew they look like the happiest person ever. It makes me think when I was little I wasn’t so happy. So, I guess, my nieces and nephews.

If you were President of the US, what would your first reform be?

My first reform would be: the health care system. I think it’s a basic human necessity we all need it. Just pay the doctors what they want to be paid and let it be universal. It’s a necessity, just like education. You’re making people suffer.

What do you need?

Affection. I did not use to think that affection was necessary. I ran away from affection but now as I get older I feel that sometimes affection is very needed, especially in hard times.

What would you do if we gave you 1 million dollars now?

I would invest most of it into my music. I would probably buy a very nice house somewhere, and will live up my days just being peaceful. That’s probably what would happen.

Which innovation, realistic or not, would greatly ease your day-to-day life?

I don’t know. I may skip that one. Technology is going too fast and I am not a big fan of that.

Do you think your life is easier or more complicated than the life of your parents?

I think my life is much more complicated than my mother’s. Because I am more complicated than my mother (laughs). I am an African American gay male who try to see the world. I have big goals and dreams for myself and I am hard on myself. The world is not as kind to me as it has been to her.

If you had to create a company, what would it be?

I always have had this dream to open up a little café, a jazz music café. However businesswise I am not good, I am a musician.

What’s the news that affects you the most in your country these days?

Death. Any time I hear about someone being murdered or someone killing someone else it affects me emotionally somehow. And also crazy events of people harassing or stalking or hurting intentionally affect me.

Can you draw something beautiful?

Mother nature, I’m not a drawer (laughs). If we don’t touch it it’s beautiful.

Can you sing something beautiful?

Song: You are so beautiful to me – Joe Cocker

What are you afraid of?

There is a list and I am almost afraid to tell you what I am afraid of. Because last time I told somebody he tried to make it come true. So, I’m afraid of people, I’m afraid of humans.

Close your eyes, you are in 2100, what do you see?

I don’t see anything; I don’t want to be there.

What is the most beautiful thing that you have seen in your life?

The mountains. I think the most beautiful thing I have ever seen was the Red Woods. The trees themselves that are so old and so huge, they are amazing.

What is your dream?

My dream is to continue my music, to find some kind of spirituality and peace. And see if I can touch every human being in some way. When they come in contact with me I want them to leave with some kind of feeling of “ok, he is kind to everybody, why can’t I be this way?”.

If you had to write a book about the current world, what would be the title?

« What are we doing? », I think that would be a good title or “What the fuck is going on?” would even be a better one! (laughs)

Who is God for you?

I think that I talk to the Universe, I used to call it God but I don’t really know what that meant. I think more about Universe than God. I feel that we come from earth, we come from the Universe, we are made most of the same components than the Universe. I come from it, therefore I should speak to it.

Which of your country's cultural specificities are you the proudest of?

I don’t know, that’s a good question. I’ve seen America in such a rough state, I don’t know, let’s skip that one.

If you could do any job regardless of money, what would it be?

I would be a singer. This is all I know it’s the better part of me, I cannot imagine doing to much of anything else.

If you had to explain our planet to an alien, what would you say?

What the fuck is it? I would be the worst person to describe our planet to an alien. He would probably pack up and leave when I was done (laughs). I am the wrong person to ask this question to!

And you, which question would you like to ask the world?

« What the fuck is going on? Have we lost our mind?”

I think my biggest concern is technology is going too fast. You’re doing things to people, that they are not aware of, you are manipulating and doing a lot of horrendous things to test your technology.

I am a victim of that I think. People are unaware that some people do things for the wrong reasons. They want to test their new equipment, their new things, they do a lot of bad things to make people go along, so they can manipulate them.

Technology has gone too far; when you start invading people’s space, when you start invading people’s mind. When you are using what they think is a simple Facebook page as a way to sell and see what’s best to sell.

I think we have gone too far and we have lost a part of our humanity. So much is about money, but we have lost our way, seriously. And I truly believe it is going to get worse.

So yes, “what the fuck is going on” this is what I would ask the alien and the world.
