Lives in New York, from GERMANY - Physician / Researcher

Interview made by Cyril Bruyelle in May 2017

What did you want to be when you were a kid?

I wanted to be a professor. I thought first about mathematics, later on medicine, always something to do with research but also with people, eventually I decided on medicine. It has more to do with people rather than just technical things like mathematics.

With whom would you like to have a coffee?

I would basically like to have a coffee with someone who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, nobody special but someone who has achieved something with their research, which is why they got a Nobel Prize, okay Obama got one, which is interesting.

If you could choose something that could be taught in every school in the world, what would it be?

Sustainability would be important to learn as everything we do in our lives has an effect on the world, to learn about the environment and respect for other people, to put oneself in their shoes, to be aware that how one interacts with other people has an effect on the future.

To you, what’s that main characteristic that all human being have in common?

Laughter. You see, laughter all over the world, what makes people happy.

I also like to laugh a lot and I believe it unites us together.

If you were President of the US, what would your first reform be?

Maybe health because of what I have seen here in the USA. In my opinion, the health system does not function here and, I have seen how it functions in Germany. I believe that it is very important when people can see it functions and have good health insurance.

What do you need?

Not much. Good food and my wife, that´s enough for me.

What would you do if we gave you 1 million dollars now?

I could consider this question forever. Maybe support this project a bit, support my family, that I could work less, supporting projects which are worth supporting, I can’t t think of anything else.

Which innovation, realistic or not, would greatly ease your day-to-day life?

I believe this is wishful thinking, but I would like to have inventions which would solve energy problems, create the possibility for efficiency, be environmentally protective, to generate energy. I believe this would actually influence our lives and is very important for a lot of people.

What’s the news that affects you the most in your country these days?

Well, I believe it is clear, everyone speaks about refugees in Germany, it is the predominant subject and it is a subject, which occupies everyone. We have to make sure that these people have a good life in Germany, and they can find jobs in the future, to be happy and not feel like they are excluded.

Do you think your life is easier or more complicated than the life of your parents?

I believe I am sure that I am doing better than what my parents did. I have so many possibilities, which I have been able to use, I really enjoy my life. I wish they had had some of my chances that they could have seen more of the world to be happier but I believe they are happy, which is also good.

If you had to create a company, what would it be?

Well, actually what I currently do. I love my job and I would actually found a research company for cancer therapy, for immune therapy because I believe it is an interesting field, a very interesting field, which humanity could benefit from and would enrich me too, that would be very nice.

Can you draw something beautiful?

I cannot draw very well but this is what is important for me, love, I love my wife, life, and that´s about it.

Can you sing something beautiful?

It´s actually very difficult as I have sung so many songs and it depends a lot on….well the situation, I will sing something for my wife…

What are you afraid of?

Well, actually about war, from environmental damage which will actually so impair our lives, that it will make our lives worse, we have actually got a very good life, good conditions, we must ensure that it actually stays as good as it is and make sure it is better for more people.

What is your dream?

To win the Nobel Prize.

Close your eyes, you are in 2100, what do you see?

I see a very technical world, I hope it is sustainable. Of course, cars, which might be operate with solar energy or another type of sustainable energy, I hope people work less, the world is unified, happy and unified.

What is the most beautiful thing that you’ve seen in your life?

As a person, my wife without a doubt, as a place and there are many places, New Caledonian which is absolutely beautiful.

Which of your country's cultural specificities are you the proudest of?

I believe, yes really, our ability to invent things. Engineers who have always tried to improve the world, always tried to discover new things.

If you could do any job regardless of money, what would you do?

A doctor, what I currently do and what I love to do,

If you had to explain our planet to an alien what would you say?

It is a planet with many various people, countries, areas, which all have many something beautiful, all have their downsides but I believe you will feel at home here, there are many interesting people.
